Ciao from New York! The city that never sleeps. I’m Alex Rossi… I am an Italian American finally getting in touch with his culture. I have family in Milan and I have visited several times. Excellent city for the night scene by the way. The only problem??? My family lives there and I haven’t been able to learn any Italian since I always get away with speaking in English. Of course of all my cousins would rather speak English than Italian with me. “Dobbiamo fare pratica” they say…

Anyhow… not this time! I’m going to Rome, but I don’t know what’s on in Rome? Do you mind enlightening me?

Thanks!

Marco

Ciao Alex… oh New York… New York… I will return one day!

I also have an Italian background and this was the main reason I decided to come to Italy. I wanted to see for myself the “old country”. Don’t worry I faced the same problem while planning my trip to Rome.

I know it’s hard to read in Italian from the get go, however, there are some great resources in English, both papers and online, advertising what’s going on in Rome. Everything is covered from art exhibitions, theater, cinema, festivals, night clubs, markets, etc.

The four websites below are in English and contain information on what’s happening in Rome, as well as general information and advice on living, visiting and studying. (also includes links to resources such as Health, Visas, Practicalities, Banking etc – Very Useful!)

Wanted In Rome has a classified section with accommodation (both apartments and rooms) to rent, as well as a Jobs section.

Rome Central also has a classified section but it doesn’t seem to be as detailed as Wanted in Rome.

Roma Turismo has some great resources, mainly geared towards the tourist. The site puts together some site-seeing itineraries for short stays. Roma Turismo also contains information on restaurants, recipes, local theatre, exhibitions etc as well as a detailed map of Rome and an Italian dictionary

Once you actually arrive in Rome and have begun improving your Italian skills, I strongly recommend you to start reading in Italian. You may not understand everything to begin with, but it’s great practice.

Roma C’è is an Italian site, and also comes out as a weekly magazine (every Wednesday). Roma C’e lists pretty much everything going on in Rome, from music, theatre, the arts, cinema, articles….. Another Magazine once you’ve arrived in Rome is Trovaroma, also in Italian. This comes out every Thursday with La Republica (one of the widely read newspapers in Italy) and again, contains information on arts and culture.

Well Alex… I hope I have been thorough enough… I did my research while in Rome and I would have killed for this information before I left.

Looking forward to hear about your experiences in Rome!

Regards,

Carlie…

P.S. @ Everyone! If you have any more resources, or advice, don’t keep it to yourself….. share it with us by adding to the comments below!
